Earned Value Management (EVM)

Earned Value Management, sometimes called Earned Value Performance Management, allows Scrum Masters and stake holders to assess past and current performance of a project and forecast project progression, allowing for measurement of advancement and early detection of problems. It does that by providing a coherent view of 3 important indicators, namely:

  • the scope
  • the schedule
  • the cost
Urban Turtle's Dashboard provides 3 widgets to project manager to visualize data relevant to EVM: the Budget Graph, the Consistency of Critical Factors Graph and the Earned Value Management Matrix.

Budget Graph

The Budget Graph is designed to help you determine the current state of your planned budget versus your spent budget, at a glance.

Iteration

This corresponds to the root iteration for your project. The iterations that are under this root iteration and that do not have any child iterations will be considered as sprints for your project.

Columns

There are two columns found in the Budget Graph:

Planned Budget (Green)

This column represents the total planned budget for your root iteration.

Total (spent) Budget (Blue)

This column represents the sum of actual spent budget for each sprint found under the selected root iteration.

Consistency of Critical Factors Graph

The Consistency of the Critical Factors Graph helps leverage three different factors: the sprint progression, the consumed budget and the completed story points. With this graph, it can be immediately seen if everything is going according to plan.

Columns

There are 3 columns per iteration found in the Consistency of the Critical Factors Graph:

Completed Sprints percentage (Yellow)

This column represents the percentage of sprints completed found under the selected root iteration. If the graph shows 5 sprints, each Completed Sprints column will be at 20%.

Backlog Completed percentage (Orange)

This column represents the percentage of points completed for each sprints found under the selected root iteration.

Consumed Budget percentage (Red)

This column represents the percentage of consumed budget for each sprint found under the selected root iteration.

Earned Value Management Matrix

The Earned Value Management Matrix helps you assess the current state of your Agile project. Tracking those value sprints after sprints will allow you to know if your project is right on track.

Rows

There are 6 rows per iteration found in the Earn Value Management Matrix:

Budget Used (Real)

This row shows the sum of Actual Budget of all sprints for the selected iteration.

Total Budget

This row is the total Planned Budget for your project.

Planned Value

This row shows the authorized budget assigned to the scheduled work to be accomplished.

Earned Value

This row shows how much of the budget and time should have been spent, with regard to the amount of work done so far.

Cost Performance Index

This row shows a measure of cost efficiency on a project. It is the ratio of earned value (EV) to actual costs (AC). A value equal to or greater than one indicates a favorable condition and a value less than one indicates an unfavorable condition.

Scheduled Performance Index

This row shows a measure of schedule efficiency on a project. It is the ratio of earned value (EV) to planned value (PV). An SPI equal to or greater than one indicates a favorable condition and a value of less than one indicates an unfavorable condition.
